Eleven years after his last game for Waikato, former Ireland halfback Isaac Boss is back in Mooloo colours for their first Ranfurly Shield defence of the year.

Boss, 36, has signed to play the NPC season for Waikato, beginning with Monday's Shield match against Thames Valley in Paeroa, where he is named on the reserves bench.

Tokoroa-born Boss played 52 games for Waikato and 32 Super Rugby games for the Chiefs and Hurricanes before leaving for Europe in 2005.

He played more than 100 games for both Ulster and Leinster, with his Irish Test career encompassing 23 Tests from 2006. His final Test was against Scotland last August.

Waikato coach Sean Botherway has named six uncapped players in his starting side and another five on the bench.

It is the first game between the North Island neighbours for 17 years.
