Island sanctuary bought for the public

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 3/06/2016

A sanctuary on Great Barrier Island has been bought for the public at a cost of nearly $3 million.

Conservation Minister Maggie Barry says native wildlife, including rare species, thrive on the 83 hectare Glenfern Sanctuary which has a pest-proof fence.

It was founded by sailing champion Tony Bouzaid in 1992.

Auckland Council and the Great Barrier Local Board put up $1.25m, the government's Nature Heritage Fund $975,000 and Foundation North $675,000.

The council will own the site.
