The 29-year-old former women's world No.1 and French Open winner made the announcement on Facebook on Thursday morning (NZDT).

Ivanovic, who won the Auckland tournament in 2014, has had a particularly tough 2016, winning just 15 matches all year and slipping to 63rd in the WTA rankings.

She has also had a series of wrist and toe injuries in recent seasons.

"I can only play if I can perform up to my own high standards and I can no longer do that," she said.

Her departure from the tournament, which starts on January 2, comes just days after Argentinian star Juan Martin del Potro withdrew due to injury.
