Labour leader Andrew Little has declared his "well padded backside" will serve him well when he takes on the Otago Rail Trail ride with his son when Parliament finishes for the year.

The pair will head to Queenstown on Friday before setting off on the ride on Saturday.

Asked if he would be bringing along padded bike shorts, Mr Little assured reporters there was no need.

"I used to do a lot of cycling, I think my backside's up for it. And I've been doing a bit of practice in the meantime," he said.

"I think with the experience of dealing with the media for the last year or more I've got a well padded backside. I've been kicked around a wee bit."

Mr Little will then spend Christmas in Christchurch.

Former Prime Minister John Key has already headed off on his holiday.

After leaving Government House following his resignation on Monday Mr Key returned to Auckland before heading to Hawaii on Tuesday where he hopes to catch up with US President Barack Obama.
