A hui of iwi representatives has decided October 28 should be the annual date for a New Zealand Land Wars Day of Remembrance.

Parliament's Maori affairs select committee is still discussing whether there should be a day of remembrance, and if so when.

When it has reached a conclusion, it will make a recommendation to the government.

Labour's Nanaia Mahuta has indicated it will go ahead regardless.

"A hui of pan-iwi representatives has settled on October 28," she said on Monday.

"While the Maori affairs select committee is yet to finalise its report, iwi and communities will forge ahead with their efforts to re-balance the history of New Zealand by recognising such significant events."
