Jackson, Wesley leave Breakers

NZN 4/05/2016

American point guard Cedric Jackson, a major figure in three of the New Zealand Breakers' four Australian NBL titles, is leaving the club.

Jackson, 30, has been the subject of multiple offers from within the NBL and the Breakers say they aren't able to get into a bidding war.

Also departing is Guam power forward Tai Wesley, who has spent two seasons with the club and was made a multi-year offer to stay, but has decided to become a free agent.

Jackson arrived in Auckland in 2011 and won back-to-back championships before heading back overseas.

In his absence, the Breakers failed to make the play-offs in the 2013-2014 season, but he returned to lead them to a third title and then to another grand final this year.

General manager Dillon Boucher says Jackson will be remembered as one of the best imports to play in the ANBL.

"His desire to win and his commitment to the club in his two stints here are without question," Boucher said.

However, changes in the league's salary cap meant players like Jackson were in greater demand than ever.

"We have maintained throughout the process that we are not in a position to get into a bidding war and we wanted to add depth in the guard department of our roster," Boucher said.

"We have therefore decided to pursue other options in regards our import guard spot."

Boucher said the Breakers wished Jackson all the best for the future, adding that he would always be welcome back at the club.

The Breakers have so far signed seven of their 11 fulltime players for next season and have two American import and two non-restricted spots open.

There is no set timetable for filling the roster ahead of the pre-season in September.

NZ Breakers players signed so far: Mika Vukona (forward), Tom Abercrombie (swingman), Corey Webster (guard), Kirk Penney (guard), Alex Pledger (centre), Finn Delany (forward), Shea Ili (point guard).
