Jock Paget is the best of the three Kiwis competing at the year's final four-star event, placed sixth in Pau, France following the dressage phase.

Riding Clifton Signature, Paget scored 44.0 penalty points to be 4.7 points off the lead held by German double Olympic champion Michael Jung.

Paget was pleased with his 12-year-old horse's form at lead-up events in Aachen and Blenheim and was confident of a prominent showing this week.

Paget's previous best result at Pau was second aboard Clifton Promise in 2012, the last year a New Zealander won, through Andrew Nicholson.

Tim Price was 11th with 48 points following his dressage ride on Xavier Faer, which is making its four-star debut.

Caroline Powell is 27th and 37th respectively on her two mounts, Flying Finish and Spice Sensation, in the 49-strong field.

It is Powell's first four-star event since breaking her leg in March during a training ride in England.
