United States Secretary of State John Kerry will visit New Zealand next week, the government has confirmed.

Mr Kerry will visit Wellington for meetings with Prime Minister John Key and Foreign Minister Murray McCully, it was announced on Saturday morning.

They would discuss currently before the United Nations Security Council, in particular the plight of civilians in besieged areas of Syria, Mr McCully said.

It would also be an opportunity "to canvass the many positive developments in the New Zealand - US relationship this year".

While in Wellington, Mr Kerry will lay a wreath at the National War Memorial.

No date for the visit was initially revealed but it is likely to be after the US election.

It also means the visit will not coincide with the New Zealand navy's 75th anniversary celebrations later in the month, where the US will send a warship to New Zealand waters for the first time in more than 30 years.
