Prime Minister John Key has congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US presidential election, and says he'll be looking to build close ties with the new administration.

"The American people have spoken and I congratulate Mr Trump on his victory after a long campaign," Mr Key said in a statement on Wednesday night.

"I will be writing to Mr Trump to offer my personal congratulations shortly."

Mr Key said New Zealand and the United States shared a strong relationship and he looked forward to that continuing.

"Over the coming months we will be looking to build close ties with the incoming administration."

NZ First leader Winston Peters, who predicted last week that Mr Trump would win, says the election result is "a dramatic lesson for the commentariat, pollsters and the political establishment".

Mr Peters correctly predicted the result in a speech to the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce.

"His victory results from the establishment treating ordinary Americans with contempt, and they are fighting back," he said on Wednesday night.

"Leading up to the election, 72 per cent said they had no trust in Washington politicians - the greatest message for the elite is that the ordinary people in the Western world are not going to go on being ignored."

ACT leader David Seymour said the result would concern many New Zealanders but it reflected the will of the American people and should be respected.

"The American government is not defined by whoever holds the presidency, but by the web of governors, senators, congress members, appointees and judges who together abide by strict checks and balances," he said.

"We must maintain and enhance our friendship with the American government and, above all, with the American people who share our fundamental values of freedom and civility."
