Tennis New Zealand boss Steve Johns will depart the organisation to take up the top job at Swimming NZ.

Johns, a former swimmer and water polo player, joined Tennis NZ in 2010 after six years as chief executive for Surf Life Saving Northern Region.

Swimming NZ chairman Bruce Cotterill says Johns' knowledge of the sport makes him the ideal candidate for the role.

"He comes into this role at an important time to lead our wonderful team as we look to consolidate and reach push our sport forward," Cotterill said.

Johns was chuffed to return to the sport in which he thrived.

"The opportunity to combine my sports management and leadership skills with the sports that have played such a big part in my life was an opportunity which I couldn't resist," Johns said.

He'll take up his new role in February.
