Seventh-seeded American Steve Johnson is through to the ASB Classic second-round after a straightforward 6-4, 6-3 win over Stephane Robert.

The 27-year-old, ranked 33rd in the world, proved too strong and powerful for his French opponent, who struggled with his serve and made six double faults.

He'll now go on to face either Russian young gun Karen Khachanov or Taiwanese veteran Yen-Hsun Lu in the Classic second round.

Ahead 4-2, the world No.53 Robert threw away his advantage by falling in four successive games, including two breaks, to lose the first set 6-4.

The second set followed a similar script, with Robert broken in a disastrous game at 3-2 before the seventh-seeded Johnson held his nerve to serve out the match.

Johnson hit 11 aces in the display.
