Labour has selected a Jordanian who came to New Zealand in 2009 as its candidate to stand in the Taupo electorate.

Al'a Al-Bustanji lives in Taupo with his partner Cynthia and runs a small shop.

"I am passionate about Taupo and this beautiful part of New Zealand," he said.

"Our local communities are full of generous and hardworking people who don't ask for much - decent health care, decent schools, good wages and a chance to one day own their own home."

To get into parliament he'll have to beat cabinet minister Louise Upston who retained the seat in 2014 with a majority of more than 15,000.
