Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce has left for the United States to promote business opportunities there.

He's interested in the WTO's Government Procurement Agreement which New Zealand joined in August last year.

It provides New Zealand companies guaranteed access to US government contracts.

"The US government is the world's largest purchaser of goods and services," he said before he left on Monday night.

"Federal government spending is worth more than $US600 ($NZ870) billion a year."
