Bill English will appoint Steven Joyce finance minister if he is elected prime minister on Monday.

"I've worked closely with him for the last eight years and he has a fantastic set of skills," Mr English said.

"He's easily the most capable person in the caucus to do the job."

Mr Joyce said Mr English talked to him about it on Wednesday night.

"I said I would be very happy with being finance minister, if it comes to pass," he told reporters.

"It will be very exciting - I've been associate finance now alongside Bill for the last eight years, it's been a long and enjoyable apprenticeship.

"We get on very well together."

Although Mr English has enough confirmed caucus support to become prime minister, Mr Joyce said he wasn't taking anything for granted.

"I'm one of those people who are a bit superstitious about those things."

Because of that, Mr Joyce was reluctant to discuss policy but said there would be changes.

"Whatever the team ends up being, you will see some change, you will see some new directions," he said.

"At the same time, everyone is cognisant that the government's direction is well supported by the public."
