Christie's auction house in London has auctioned a rare original score by JS Bach for a final price of $A4.32 million.

A rare autographed manuscript by German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) has sold for STG2.5 million ($A4.32 million) at London auction house Christie's.

The sheet music manuscript for the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro for lute or keyboard in E flat major, BWV 998 dates from the period between 1735 and 1740.

The piece was offered for sale for the first time since 1969, according to Christie's.

"No more than 10 of Bach's complete autographed manuscripts are thought to survive in private hands," the auction house said on its website.
