Junior All Whites outclass Honduras

A compelling 3-1 win over Honduras has lifted New Zealand to verge of qualifying for the knockout phase at the FIFA under-20 World Cup in South Korea.

The Junior All Whites lifted their performance several degrees from the opening 0-0 draw with Vietnam, deservedly beating the Central Americans to go to four points in their group.

Striker Myer Bevan bagged a double, including a spectacular goal in the opening minute when his angled blast went in off the crossbar.

Virginia-based Joe Bell was influential in midfield and set up the second goal, delivering a free kick which was headed home by Hunter Ashworth.

Honduras struck back after halftime, when an Ashworth mistake allowed Jorge Alvarez to fire home.

New Zealand restored their advantage soon afterwards when Bevan scored from the penalty spot following a foul on captain Noah Billingsley.

Even if they lose their final group match against unbeaten France on Sunday, the Kiwis are still a good chance to advance.

The top two teams advance to the round of 16, along with the four best third place-getters.

Two years ago, when New Zealand hosted the tournament, four points proved enough to advance through their group at a men's under-20 tournament for the first time.
