More than 1000 enthusiastic Kiwi kids will look for personal best runs, jumps and throws on Thursday as a popular athletics carnival kicks off in Hastings.

Ninety clubs from across New Zealand's North Island will send junior athletes aged 14 and under to the 2017 Colgate Games.

The games' North Island chair Sharee Jones says Kiwis have renewed enthusiasm for Olympic sports following New Zealand's successful 2016 medal haul in Rio.

"The energy and enthusiasm off the back of the Rio Olympics means that more children are giving athletics a go - that's great to see," she says.

The games are being held at the Hawke's Bay Regional Sports Park, an arena where New Zealand shot put champion Jacko Gill broke the world age group distance record four times.

Organisers will also hand out four Nick Willis Scholarships to promising junior athletes.

More than 790 South Island juniors from 53 clubs will get their chance to impress when a second edition of the games kicks off at Invercargill from January 13 to 15.
