Junior students sent home from WGC

Wellington Girls' College is sending its junior students home because engineers are checking the stairs in a multi-storey block of classrooms.

Structural engineers on Friday determined that the stairs at both ends of the school's Tower Block need further investigation, and have recommended that these be closed off in the meantime, the school says.

As the atrium stairs are also out of action, there are not enough exits from the Tower Block for all students in the event of an emergency evacuation.

"Therefore, we have decided to send all junior students home immediately," the school says.

Junior classes are cancelled on Monday and decision will be made as soon as possible about whether the school will be open for junior classes after Monday.

Exams will continue as normal as they take place in a different building.

Wellington Girls' College is a state secondary school located in Thorndon in central Wellington with more than 1300 students.
