Jury chosen in stop-go murder trial

George Taiaroa © Mediaworks George Taiaroa A jury has been chosen in the trial for the man accused of the 2013 murder of stop-go man George Taiaroa.

Quinton Paul Winders, 45, is charged with shooting dead the 67-year-old as he held a stop-go sign at a road construction site in Atiamuri, south of Tokoroa.

His trial is starting in the High Court at Rotorua.

A jury of five men and seven women was selected on Monday morning. The Crown expects to call around 140 witnesses and the trial has conservatively been estimated to take at least four weeks.

Mr Taiaroa was shot in March 2013 but an arrest was not made until more than two-and-a-half years later.
