Kaikoura gets back online

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 16/11/2016

Kaikoura's almost 1500 broadband customers can dial back into the world wide web now network providers have restored services following Monday's quake.

Vodafone, Spark and Chorus re-routed the town's internet traffic to Christchurch and Wellington by tapping into Vodafone's underwater cable linking the cities, which runs near the coast.

All customers should now be connected except those with localised damage to their lines or those experiencing power loss in their street.

Work to re-connect phone landlines is due to be completed later on Thursday.

Landline phone services have also been restored in Waiau, southwest of Kaikoura, after providers used a helicopter to bring in a 1km fibre replacement cable on Wednesday.

Service providers hope to re-establish broadband and full mobile connectivity on Thursday.
