Kaikoura shellfish ban extended

The ban on taking shellfish from the Kaikoura coast has been extended for nine months.

Scampi and rock lobster aren't affected by the ban, but paua and other shellfish have been hit hard by the November earthquake, says Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy.

"Over 20 per cent of the adult paua habitat covering 94 hectares in the closed portion of the Paua 3 fishery has been lost due to uplift," he said on Monday.

The area where juvenile paua live had been affected even more, he said.

Mr Guy said he believed people understood the need to rebuild the fishery for the long term.

"We need to give the remaining adult paua and shellfish beds time to spawn, and the juveniles a chance to settle."
