Kaikoura's crayfish fishery to reopen

Kaikoura's lucrative crayfish fishery will reopen on Tuesday.

It was closed after the earthquake and the government put $2 million into a research survey to find out the state of the fishery.

"The scientific findings from this survey indicate the fishery has come through in relatively good shape," Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy said on Friday.

"This has given me enough confidence to officially reopen the fishery for all sectors - recreational, commercial and customary."

The closure notice affecting all other shellfish, excluding scampi, is still in force until February 20.
