The four-lane expressway between Mackays Crossing and Peka Peka has 18 bridges and 16km of walking and cycle ways.

It's part of the SH1 Wellington Northern Corridor, which stretches from Wellington Airport to just north of Levin.

Transport Minister Simon Bridges the early opening is great news for locals and the region.

"In just a few weeks' time this connection will open, to deliver smoother and safer journeys for everyone," he said.

"Reduced and more reliable travel times to and from Wellington will make Kapiti a more desirable place to live and do business."

There will be a completion event on February 16 and the road will be open to traffic soon after that.

Christchurch:
If there is one word to describe Christchurch, it would be resilient. While the Christchurch Cathedral is still damaged, there’s a transitional cardboard cathedral.
