Karaka sales hit $29m on opening day

Organisers have declared the opening day of the national yearling sales a success after horses changed hands for a combined $29 million at Karaka.

"It's been a hugely successful first day of the sales ... to achieve over $29 million on day one is a great result" said Andrew Seabrook, managing director of New Zealand Bloodstock.

The top price paid was $825,000 for a bay colt from Beltana Stud bred O'Reilly-Volkrose which was sold AR Bell Racing/China Horse Club/Newgate Farm.

The average price of the 160 lots sold on opening day of the 91st edition pf the premier sales was $181,422 with the median $137,500.

International racing figures such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, and BBA Ireland had all made purchases.
