Kayaker found safe at home in Wellington

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 12/06/2016

A kayaker seen off the Wellington coast in severe weather is safe but police say it wasn't a very good idea to venture out in such conditions.

The male kayaker was last seen at 4.30pm on Sunday heading around the back of Taputeranga Island just off the coast of Island Bay, promoting police to call for information and sightings.

He was safe and well at home and contacted police when he saw the media coverage.

"This is a timely reminder for people to be aware of forecasted weather conditions, swell and tides before venturing out," police say.

On Saturday, a kayaker was saved from drowning in the Grey River, also in severe weather conditions, thanks to the quick actions of bystanders.

A dramatic video posted on Facebook by artist Brian Hunter shows the kayaking man screaming for help after he falls into the West Coast river and is battered by the swelling waters on Saturday afternoon.

A group of onlookers quickly throw the man a life buoy and pull him gasping onto nearby rocks.

CoastGuard New Zealand said the bystanders' quick actions saved his life.
