Kayakers have last pre-Olympic hit-out

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 16/06/2016

Kayakers Mike Dawson and Luuka Jones will be chasing improved performances when they have their final pre-Olympic hit-out in France.

The Rio-bound pair, competing in their respective K1 events, are part of a nine-strong New Zealand team at Pau this weekend for the third of the canoe slalom World Cup's five round.

Dawson, who skipped last week's World Cup event in Spain, wants to gauge himself against his Olympic rivals.

"It's a pretty wicked chance to test everything, to work together with the team and get everything finalised before we head on down to Rio," he said.

Dawson's last competitive outing, in the opening World Cup round in Italy, was disappointing as he missed out on the semi-finals on a course that suited him.

Jones did go to Spain, where she qualified seventh fastest but then finished 21st in the semi-finals.

"After a mixed race in Seu, I've definitely got some good learnings to take into Pau," she said.

"It's another good opportunity to practise race routines and, like Seu, it will be a really stacked field."
