Kerry stops over on way to Antarctica

As the American presidential election votes were being tallied up, US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in New Zealand for a stopover on the way to Antarctica.

Mr Kerry landed on Wednesday afternoon and was met by Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee and Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel.

As previously advised, he did not speak to media at the airport.

Mr Kerry, who was the Democratic candidate in the 2004 presidential election, losing to incumbent George W Bush, heads for Antarctica on Thursday.

He returns to Christchurch on Saturday night and will meet Prime Minister John Key in Wellington on Sunday before leaving New Zealand later that day.
