Prime Minister John Key has assured the nation he's only fainted once, has regular intensive check-ups and is in good health.

Mr Key was questioned about his health on Tuesday following US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's collapse at a campaign event.

Mr Key recalled that he fainted in a Christchurch restaurant in 2013.

"It can be the rigours of the job, in my case it was completely out of the blue," he said.

"They had run a series of tests because I was going to Antarctica and I passed with flying colours - after I fainted they ran them all again and nothing showed up."

Mr Key says he has a full bank of tests every year, and he's in good health.

"They usually tell me to lose two kilos."
