Prime Minister John Key has offered his congratulations to his newly installed British counterpart Theresa May.

Mr Key is among a number of world leaders who have made congratulatory calls to Mrs May, who replaced David Cameron as the UK's prime minister in the aftermath of the Brexit vote.

In the call, Mr Key said he wanted discussions on a free trade agreement between New Zealand and the UK to begin early on, a spokeswoman for Number 10 said.

The leaders of Japan, India, Pakistan and Jordan also offered their congratulations.

"A common theme that emerged in the phone calls from Prime Minister Key of New Zealand, Prime Minister Abe of Japan, Prime Minister Modi of India, Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan and King Abdullah of Jordan is the importance that they all attach to their partnership with the United Kingdom and their wish to further strengthen co-operation, whether on trade, security or across the board," the spokeswoman said.
