Key discusses extradition treaty

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 19/04/2016

Prime Minister John Key has discussed a formal extradition treaty with China during his visit to Beijing.

He says there's up to 60 people living in New Zealand who China wants to extradite on fraud charges and the issue came up when he met Premier Li Keqiang.

"I think it's possible, we're certainly not opposed," Mr Key told reporters after his meeting.

"They'd have to have a serious case to answer."

Mr Key says New Zealand wouldn't agree to extradite anyone to China unless the government was certain they wouldn't be tortured or face the death penalty.
