Prime Minister John Key has met Helen Clark at the United Nations in New York and assured her the government will continue to support her bid to become the next UN secretary-general.

Mr Key's meeting with the former Labour prime minister took place soon after he arrived in New York on Monday for UN leaders week.

Miss Clark is reported to have again said she has no intention of pulling out of the race, despite doing poorly in a series of polls by the 15 Security Council members.

While he's in New York Mr Key will present New Zealand's address to the UN General Assembly and chair a meeting of the Security Council on the Syrian crisis.

New Zealand is one of the 10 non-permanent members of the council and currently holds the presidency.
