Key pushes Clark's candidacy with Biden

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/07/2016

Prime Minister John Key sought support for Helen Clark's bid to be the next UN secretary-general when he met US Vice-President Joe Biden.

The US is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, which will recommend a candidate to the general assembly.

"Like all P5 members, they never say who they are supporting," Mr Key said after his meeting in Auckland with Mr Biden on Thursday.

"What he said is that they see her as someone with enormous capacity, I don't think they question that.

"And I think they believe the organisation would be well served by having someone with her skills... I think we have a sense they're going into this process with an open mind."
