Key unfazed by Turnbull's tweet

Prime Minister John Key has brushed off his Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull's tweet that no two countries are closer than Australia and Britain.

That relationship is often attributed to Australia and New Zealand, but Mr Key isn't fazed.

Mr Turnbull tweeted his remarks after a meeting British Prime Minister Theresa May.

"I think he's just making the point that Australia, like New Zealand, has a very deep historical relationship with the United Kingdom," Mr Key told reporters on Tuesday.

"I don't feel jilted."

Asked which country New Zealand felt most close to, he replied: "Historically we've always said Australia, and that Anzac relationship that's been there for such a long time is the foundation stone but I don't think we should feel too precious about it."

Mr Key joked that he might raise the tweet when he meets Mr Turnbull at the East Asia Summit in Vientiane on Wednesday.
