Andrew King has been confirmed as Hamilton's new mayor by a wafer-thin margin after special votes were counted.

Mr King edged out rival Paula Southgate by just nine votes in the race to succeed outgoing mayor Julie Hardaker.

He polled 8728 votes compared to Ms Southgate's 8719.

Mr King was provisionally elected mayor after Saturday's election with a 14-vote hold on the mayoral chains prior to the counting of special votes.

Ms Southgate has until Tuesday to seek a judicial recount.
