Top-seeded Kiwi Joelle King has had to work harder than expected to win her first-round match at a PSA world tour event in Hong Kong.

World No.9 King saw off 23rd-ranked Joey Chan of Hong Kong 14-12 11-9 9-11 11-8 at the HKFC International to set up a quarter-final against Indian sixth seed Dipika Pallikal.

King missed playing at the concurrent PSA world series finals by one ranking spot. The rich tournament in Dubai features the world's top-eight men and women.

Meanwhile, men's fifth seed Paul Coll of New Zealand was also successful in Hong Kong, winning his opener 11-6 11-4 14-12 over Qatar's Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi.
