Kiwis have been taking to social media to send prayers and best wishes to actor James Rolleston, who was injured in a crash near Opotiki.

The 19-year-old star of film Boy was flown to Tauranga Hospital by rescue helicopter after the car he was in hit Otara Bridge late on Tuesday night.

Musician Stan Walker posted a smiling picture of himself and Rolleston on Instagram asking people to pray for the actor's recovery.

"He's been in a massive crash and needs our prayers. Jesus take care of him and also bring peace and strength to his family. Kia Kaha brother," Walker wrote.

Actor Jed Brophy and Labour MP Kelvin Davis tweeted "Kia kaha" in support of Rolleston.

The BayTrust rescue helicopter initially described Rolleston's condition as critical.

However on Wednesday morning, a Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokeswoman would not detail his condition.

Rolleston's agent Tim Gordon, who is flying from Wellington to be by his side, told NZ Newswire the hospital had not indicated his client was in a critical condition, but he did not know his exact status.

Rolleston took the lead in Taika Waititi's celebrated film Boy, as well as starring alongside Cliff Curtis in The Dark Horse.

A second person in the car suffered minor injuries.
