New Zealand is sending $200,000 in emergency aid to help the almost half a million Sri Lankans affected by floods and landslides.

The aid will go to the Sri Lankan Red Cross so it can provide immediate relief to those impacted by the torrential monsoon rains, Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee said on Tuesday.

"[There is] a death toll of more than 150 and many people missing," he said.

"New Zealand is committed to supporting the people of Sri Lanka at this difficult time."

New Zealand would continue monitoring its support for Sri Lanka as further heavy monsoon rains were forecast for the coming days, Mr Brownlee said.
