Kiwi cricketers star in upset win

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 21/05/2016

New Zealanders Jimmy Neesham and Hamish Rutherford starred for Derbyshire as they thumped defending English Twenty20 champions Lancashire by nine wickets at Old Trafford.

Derbyshire completed the comprehensive win with 5.2 overs to spare, chasing down 132 in a 19-over contest.

Prior to this North Group fixture, Derbyshire had only won a total of 39 matches in 13 seasons compared to Lancashire's 84.

Lancashire reached a modest 131-7 after the rain-delayed start.

Former captain Tom Smith managed nine off eight balls before chipping Neesham to mid-on, with the New Zealander later trapping skipper Steven Croft lbw for a top-scoring 31 as he collected 2-38 off his four overs.

Rutherford then led Derbyshire's run chase with a blistering unbeaten 71 off 40 balls with six fours and three sixes.

He was well supported by another of Derbyshire's Kiwi contingent, Neil Broom, who made an unbeaten 25 as they shared a match-winning stand of 94 inside 11 overs for the second wicket.
