Marcus Daniell has been knocked out of Australian Open men's doubles championship, meaning a 19-year New Zealand drought continues.

Daniell and his Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner went down 7-6 6-3 in a third-round match against Australians Sam Groth and Chris Guccione in just under two hours.

No New Zealander has reached a doubles quarter-final since Brett Steven teamed up with American Pat Galbraith at Wimbledon in 1998.

The entire first set went with serve with the momentum of the match hinging on a dramatic tiebreaker, which the big-serving Australians won 11-9.

They secured an early break in the second set and couldn't be stopped from there.
