Kiwi dressage rider shines in Munich

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/05/2016

Palmerston North dressage rider Julie Brougham has virtually rubber-stamped her selection for the Rio Olympics with an impressive result at a three-star event in Germany.

Riding Vom Feinsten, Brougham was fifth in a strong international field at the Munchem-Riem Grand Prix event in Munich, recording a score of 68.627 per cent.

World No.4 ranked rider Jessica Bredow-Werndl of Germany was a runaway winner with 76.137 per cent.

It was another strong performance from Brougham, who has already met the New Zealand Olympic Committee selection requirements for Rio, picking up the required points at the Horse of the Year show in Hastings in March.

While she is the only Kiwi to do so, her selection won't be ratified until late June, allowing time for others to achieve the standards.

Brougham took Vom Feinsten to Europe in April to pursue top flight competition and is delighted with their progress.

"I felt so proud of Steiny - the mistakes in the Grand Prix were more mine than his," she said.

"Today he was a bit tired but he still did it for me."
