A New Zealander has appeared in an Irish court over a large-scale drug operation, local media is reporting.

The Irish Times reports Serbian-born Zoran Spasich, 56, travelling on a New Zealand passport, is one of three charged after police discovered a cannabis-growing house containing 300 plants - estimated to be worth $377,000 - in Fermoy, County Cork.

He appeared in court charged with possession of cannabis for sale or supply on Monday (local time) and did not seek bail, the report said.

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade earlier said it had seen reports of the arrest but had not been approached for consular assistance.
