A New Zealand nun spent three days praying in a broken Italian lift before divine intervention came in the form of a cleaning lady.

The 69-year-old and her 58-year-old Irish companion, also a nun, became stuck in the lift in Rome on Friday without food or water.

But they say God works in mysterious ways and it was a humble cleaning lady who raised the alarm after her calls to the Marist convent went unanswered.

She called the police who rescued the praying pair nearly three full days after they entered the lift.

They were taken to nearby hospital and treated for dehydration.

They were shaking but in good health, Il Messaggero reports.

The nuns were guests of the Marist Sisters House, which welcomes temporary religious missions from around the world. The pair were the only people in the building over the weekend.

The lift became stuck after an electrical power failure.
