Kiwi on drugs charges says he was framed

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 31/03/2016

A Kiwi arrested on drugs charges in South America now says he stupidly allowed himself to be framed, according to reports.

Wellington man Scott Elliott, 38, was taken into custody by police in Ecuador's capital, Quito, after customs officers allegedly found a kilogram of cocaine in his luggage.

Elliott, who has a criminal history including aggravated robbery charges in New Zealand, has now told Fairfax Media he was set up but admits it was "stupid" on his part.

He said he went to Argentina to pick up a case he believed contained documents for a friend and had even checked inside it to make sure.

It was not until customs officers removed a panel in the case that he realised there was drugs in it, he told Fairfax.

"It was stupid on my part, and obviously I'll be paying the price," he said.

Elliott is due to appear in court this month and could possibly face up to seven years in jail if convicted.

He is believed to have been facing insolvency charges in Wellington when he left the country.
