NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 11/04/2016

World champion New Zealand sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have wasted little time stamping their class on the European 49er Championships in Spain.

The combination won two races and were second in another on the first day of action in Barcelona to hold a six-point lead over Austrians Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch.

Olympic champions Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen are two points further back in the 72-boat field with New Zealand development pair Logan Dunning-Beck and Jack Simpson lying 18th.

In the women's 49erFX class Alex Maloney and Molly Meech lie fifth after the first days's racing with a win, two fourth placings and a fifth.

They are six points behind the Dutch pair Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz who won all their races while young Kiwi combination Erica Dawson and Ellie Copeland are 18th.
