Miguel Porteous © Instagram/miguelporteous Miguel Porteous Christchurch teenager freeskier Miguel Porteous has clinched a superpipe silver medal at the X Games in Colorado in a career breakthrough result.

Porteous took advantage of a string of crashes from leading rivals to post an unexpected podium finish at one of his sport's most high-profile events.

The 17-year-old was only invited to compete two days earlier as an injury alternate after an American competitor pulled out.

"I just can't really fathom it right now, it's unbelievable," Porteous said.

"I was excited to get a chance to compete. My goal was just to put a run down in the X Games environment which is unlike anything I've experienced before."

A field of 11 struggled in icy conditions, with only one competitor landing a full run in the first of two rounds.

Porteous was sixth at that point before executing an exceptional second run which registered 81.00 points.

Only American Olympian Aaron Blunck, who won the halfpipe earlier in the week, managed more with 84.66 to clinch his second gold of the Games.

Kiwi Olympian Jossi Wells, who won slopestyle gold at last year's X Games, will seek to defend his title on Saturday (local time).
