Kiwi World Tour cyclist Dion Smith has produced a second prominent finish on the Volta a Catalunya in Spain.

Smith, 24, crossed the line fifth following a bunch finish on the 134km fourth stage from La Seu d'Urgell to Igualada, won by Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni.

It follows the Belgian team Wanty-Groupe Gobert rider's fourth placing in the opening stage in northern Spain.

The hilly fourth stage on Thursday was reduced by 58km because of snow.

With three stages remaining, Smith is well adrift on general classification, in 106th place and more than 27 minutes behind American leader Tejay Van Garderen.

Kiwi George Bennett is a creditable 13th overall, the Team LottoNI-Jumbo rider less than 2min off the pace.

Orica-Scott support rider Sam Bewley of New Zealand is more than half an hour off the lead.
