Ricardo Christie has burst into contention to return to surfing's Championship Tour with victory in the latest qualifying event.

Gisborne surfer Christie, who competed on the elite tour in 2015 but lost his spot, tasted victory at the Martinique Surf Pro in the French West Indies.

He won a tight final over Brazilian Bino Lopes, scoring 16.66 for this two best-scoring waves. His opponent scored 15.57.

Christie soared to 10th in the world qualifying series standings. The top 10 surfers at the end of the year will earn automatic promotion to the Championship Tour.

The 28-year-old will compete this week in Barbados at an event which also features leading Kiwi Paige Hareb in the women's competition.

Hareb is fourth in the women's qualifying series as she also seeks a return to the elite level.
