New Zealand's Michael Venus has lost a tight first-round doubles match in straight sets at the French Open.

Venus and Croatian partner Mate Pavic went down 7-6 6-4 to American pair Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky in the first doubles match to be completed at the clay court grand slam in Paris.

Venus, ranked 45th in the world, and Pavic beat the same opponents in the final of Auckland's ASB Classic in February.

They lost the key points in Monday's match which featured only one break of serve. The first-set tiebreak proved crucial, lost 7-4.

New Zealand has two other men in the doubles draw.

Artem Sitak is teaming with American Nicholas Monroe while his regular Kiwi partner Marcus Daniell has aligned with American Brian Baker.
