Kiwi Wilkinson makes slick PGA start

Tim Wilkinson has made a strong start to the rain-hit PGA Tour event in California but progress is less bright for two other Kiwis in the field.

Wilkinson had climbed to a share of fourth at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am before rain halted play in the first round.

The Kiwi had mixed five birdies with a bogey to be three-under through 13 holes, defying wind and sporadic shows predominated at the famed coastal links course.

He was among about half the field of 154 still to complete their opening round.

The three co-leaders - Americans Rick Lamb and Joel Dahmen and Korean Seung-Yul Noh - had all finished, lying one stroke ahead of Wilkinson.

New Zealand No.1 Danny Lee never teed off, pulling out of the tournament early on Thursday. The reason was not immediately available.

A third Kiwi, Steve Alker, struggled to five-over through 16 holes and will miss the cut on Friday unless he improves dramatically.
