Kiwifruit firm fined $226k over breaches

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 9/06/2016

A Bay of Plenty kiwifruit business has had to pay more than $226,000 for breaching employment laws.

Freemind Enterprize Ltd was ordered to cough up after a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment investigation uncovered a number of problems.

The company had not provided written employment agreements, wage and time or holiday records for 121 employees harvesting kiwifruit between 2009 and 2013.

It also failed to provide workers with holiday pay, or extra wages for working public holidays.

One employee was paid less than minimum wage.

The company's director Gurmail Lally was made jointly and severally liable for the amount owing.

MBIE said a number of the employees were temporary migrant workers who may have already left the country.
